Re: What have you just bought?

Currently listening with the M3, Gamma2 and Gotan Project, comparing to the AD900 and ESW9. The clarity and impact of the DT1350 far surpasses the ESW9, with qualitatively 'twice' the isolation. I can barely hear myself type, but they clamp hard . The bass on the ESW9 is a lot more prominent. Versus...

Re: What have you just bought?

What usage do you have planned for them? At work phones, portables? What are you driving them from? Portable and travel, direct from a Nexus S, high bit rate MP3s. I tried, and tried and TRIED, but I just couldn't handle the comfort of the IEMs any more. I still maintain that the ESW9 is a great wo...

Re: What have you just bought?

Just picked up a set of Beyer DT1350 locally here in Canadialand. These things kick a *significant* amount of arse......

Re: Burnin - should you bother?

Recent experience with 'burn in'...... I listened to my AD900 for the first time in over a year the other day. For the first hour or so they sounded pretty nasty, but these are thoroughly used phones. So it is pretty clear to me that after such a long break, and listening to my Stax, HD-650 and ESW9...

Correct. The LED's set the grid voltage, and the tube self-biases.

In Canadialand, the Starbucks espresso isn't half bad. Its just that they kill it with WAY too much scorched milk.

Re: am wondering what headphone amp combo?

I'm no fan of Senn's but I really like the 650. Too bad it's way overpriced, wherever it's sold in the world. I'm the same. I've never heard a HD5** series that I liked, but the HD650 are great. A great contrast/companion to my AD900/Stax. I certainly wouldn't pay Australian retail prices, but I go...

Re: ASUS Xonar Essence One Hi-Fi USB DAC

The LME49600 is a buffer, not an all-in-one chip amp per se. The TPA6120A2 amp has really good specs, but is stupidly fast being a current-feedback opamp, I don't really think a headphone amp needs 1300V/uS slew rate and 100MHz bandwidth. But it needs a 10 ohm or higher output resistor to block cab...

Re: ASUS Xonar Essence One Hi-Fi USB DAC

32/384 upsampling would indicate it has a different dac (ST/X is 24/192) - what could it be??? Might be the AKM? Forget the model number. It seems to be popular in cheap gear. There are also options from Ti, Cmedia, Sabre etc. but I doubt the latter. It will be interesting to see what eventuates wi...

Re: Solid state Vs Tube amplification

I'd probably only go for the DIY tube amps since they look like really good designs. Everything else looks like bad quality to me This. DV and LD probably aren't that bad for their commercial price, but certainly not deserving of their godly status on Head-Fi. I think it is a lot harder to do a com...

Bottlehead Crack, notable exception.

I wouldn't touch the typical Head-Fi faves like the Littledot or Darkvoice with a 10 foot pole. Well, maybe a baseball bat......

Re: Same old song over at Head-Fi....

Anyway, I'm still kind of keen to build the amp if just to prove that measurements aren't everything. Since it's meant to be all through hole I should be able to manage. Go for it. I am secretly hoping for a huge shit storm when this is out in the community, and nobody likes the sound of it...... :...

Re: Same old song over at Head-Fi....

But a driver with a voice coil is also a current generator, since it has a coil attached to the cone and suspension, and that coil is immersed in a magnetic field. For every motion the coil makes, it will generate a current that will be seen by any electrically attached equipment, such as an amplif...
