close enough?

Beefy wrote:the 540Av2 and 640Av2 are the same architecture, with the 640Av2 having upgraded components for more power.

oh look, 640A has same architecture as 540A, hence what he said about the 540A applies also to the 640A

Edit:

Beefy wrote:The Arietta has perhaps a tiny little bit less bass impact than my 540Av2's headphone out, but otherwise they sound very similar. On the plus sides, balance from the Arietta is FAR better at lower volumes and the volume is much easier to control. Regarding volume, even when the volume control is at its absolute minimum the sound is still surprisingly loud - my 540Dv2 must have a very high voltage on its line level output.

Oh look even more...
Could this bear get any more right? Only time will tell... :p

CA Amp would be a good way of killing two birds with one stone if it's as good as other headphone amps. At least it is a solid brand and would be nice to get a few more of those components down the track.

That would annoy me with the volume control, i'd want a decent range perhaps thats why headphone amps are so much better :unibrow:

Beefy also said he found some kind of attenuators which made it better...

Re: PC Speakers - Good Quality

Postby spinifex » Sun Jun 13, 2010 9:46 am

Hi, I am actually 'hunting' for some decent quality PC speakers - for music listening.

I am running a Xonar DX and currently have some Logitech Z3's 2.1's and they run a bit overkill with the base.

I would rather something a bit more 'worthy' of running off of a Xonar DX.

Suggestions ...

There is nothing wrong with My yamaha 2.1 speakers, i'll wait till they die as well.
Better off concentrating on the source and rips.

I saw those a week ago but was leaning towards the AudioEngine 5's http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?mai ... s_id=12298 which are a couple hundred dollars more.
I'm just not sure about the sound (which is the issue here) because the Logitech Z3's are very base heavy. I am wanting them to listen to lots of New Age, Indian Raga (sitar and flute) and some classical music. I really don't do DOOF DOOF so am not sure if I will miss the excessive base.

Have you listened to the AudioEngine 2's or the AudioEngine 5's?

EDIT .. TIme Out

Just saw this thread..... viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4156 I should have looked more closely before posting.

yes, in fact i do own the A2s, their sound is impressive, and both the A2s and A5s sound similar from what ive heard, though there is the issue of the A5s overheating and shutting down automatically if you play them too loudly (e.g. for house parties). i havent experienced this with my A2s, but i suspect they would do the same if i played them loudly for an extended period of time.

My a2s provide about 80% of the detail i get from my ad900s(in my opinion), which is already impressive considering their price, and also considering their build quality, i would highly recommend them over other pc speakers. the bass is actually sufficient, despite the lack of a subwoofer, and the bass is accurate as well, it does go to a pretty deep range, but wont satisfy if you are looking for a set of speakers to do that rumbling BOOM effect from movies/games. also, the a2s do go to significantly high volumes without distorting

hope this rambling piece helps :)
