Shure SRH440 VS Sennheiser HD518

Post by Lemiixem » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:49 pm

Hey Guys,
I am trying to decide whether I should buy the Shure SRH440 or The Sennheiser HD518, I will be using these headphones for Movies and Games But mostly movies.
I will be plugging these headphones into my computer which has onboard audio from the "Via VT1705" audio chip on the motherboard. The Via VT1705 has 93dB SNR.
Will the onboard sound be enough to power the Shure SRH440 or Sennheiser HD518?
And also it doesn't bother me if the headphones are open or closed.

you wouldnt go wrong with either the 440 or the 518. what i definately would do though, is invest in a dedicated sound card .. that WILL make a difference.

The HD518 sound bad, the SRH440 sounds good :)
In fact, the Brainwavz HM3, Audio Technica AD300/AD400/TAD500/AD700, Alessandro MS-1, Koss KSC-75 and a whole bunch more also sound better than the HD518.

SRH440's... should be OK. I have them straight off a laptop for movies...... no problems.
But.... if I didn't need the isolation from house noises I would use my MS1's.

I have been reading some reviews and heard that the Shure SRH440 is a bit uncomfortable.
What do you guys think of the comfort levels of the Shure SRH440? I will be wearing these headphones for around constantly for 2-5 hours. I have one of these heads that people consider 'ideal' for the Audio Technica AD700.
What sound card do you guys recommend for me if I were to use it with the Shure SRH440 or the Sennheiser HD518. I only have a PCI-E slot available and my budget for a soundcard is $100

Comfort with stock pads is OK IMO - I can remember watching full movies with them easily enough, they don't last that long though.
I ditched them when they started to crack and got the 840 pads which are very comfortable.

When I tried both the 440 and 840s, the 840s seemed to be quite a bit more comfortable for me. I've also read in numerous articles/reviews that the 840 pads are more comfortable than the stock 440 ones.

One other thing I wanted to ask is, which headphone do you guys think has better immersion for movies. Shure SRH440 or Audio Technica AD700?
