MS1 414 pads V 1/4 mod?

Post by Dynabass » Wed May 30, 2012 11:39 am

Hi,
Just got the MS1s and am loving them, really got me back into enjoying music again.

Bought a set of 414 pads to try out and I quite like them compared to the comfies. Actually surprised by how much difference there is just from changing the pads, its a tad muffled but I like that they're not so bright and feel more rounded in the bottom end, and comfortable too!

anyway, before I do it I was wondering what is the difference in sound between the 414 pads and exposing the drivers with the quarter mod?

Probably remove some of that muffling. Just do it!

Would it affect the brightness? I fatigue quite easily from lots of highs (too many years as a bass player standing next to drummers crash cymbols!!)

I've heard mixed reactions on them. Those who love them are long time Grado fans, and thats what came with the older Grados.

Its likely that the highs will increase a touch, and you'll lose a touch of the muffle. Can't tell you how much sorry mate. Tried the bowls?

Pads have a huge impact on Grados. Usually the aim of mods is the increase the balance (headfi mods tend to focus on increasing the bass). Apparent there's also a sock mod that helps with the brightness.

There is heaps of mods for them. But cutting a hole out of the middle probably won't change anything drastically, the driver remains the same distance from there ear, which has a large effect.

Cut the hole and get some velour and cover the foam. No i haven't tried it, but i don't like foam touching my ears, would much prefer velour. I have tried making little velour covers for the bowl pads of my brother's MSpros. He didn't like them, but i thought they were pretty good, felt way better against the ear.

If cutting a hole does slightly increase harshness, it would still allow you to find a better balance by sticking a disc of felt, or old t-shirt, or whatever, under the pads

Alessandro represent. I love the MS-Pros (musical), and before that loved my ATH-900s(analytical), I would almost classify them in the opposite camps to each other.

Is the title being '1/4' mod just a shorthand, or a misinterpret of how the Quarter Mod got its name? :P

It may also involve cutting a 1/4 off the senn pads. I read about it quite a long time ago, but it was to bring the sound back in line with the grado house sound.

They use a US Quarter and lay it on the pad and cut around. Hence the name.

Maybe try a $2 mod and work your way up to a 50c mod.
