Same old song over at Head-Fi....

Postby grevillea » Wed Jul 20, 2011 8:25 am

Jude has clashed openly and very publicly with several board members recently, and he has the upper hand when he can ban anyone who disagrees with 'prevailing wisdom' on HF. I find his bias towards Ray Samuels to be particularly obvious, but overall I get it - its his board and he can take his toys and go home if he wants to. To Marcus' credit, he doesnt ban people who disagree with him until they become openly insulting - in the case of HF, it doesnt have to get to that stage:

http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/

Basically, nwavguy called 'bullshit' on the measurements of several highly regarded pieces of kit and managed to get himself booted. I'm sure there are two sides to every story, but he doesnt strike me as the usual 'go f*ck yourself !' keyboard warrior.

Moral of the story - be prepared to question everything in this glorious universe.

More like bad Karaoke after a bender...

I'd noticed a long while ago HF had seriously ramped up the sponsorship part of the site - as if the covert shilling wasn't bad enough...

The more I read about the 'under the hood' side of audio, the more I can see why people pay more for German/Brit/US engineering and quality control - thats a broad generalisation, but I'm starting to see why a certain $800+ amp be a better longterm investment than something from Shenzhen. Just my two cents worth.

Nah - Jude needs to spend some time browsing 'Australian Hi-Fi' and its sister magazine 'AV for Inner-City Gay Males' : its beyond blatant.

Well, certain not long departed from Headphonic amp suppliers took their bat and ball after not getting unwaveringly postive woodys over their product. They're probably get their money's worth on HF.

I've been enjoying nwavguy's blog since someone linked to it from here. Not surprising someone who actually measures product performance isn't too popular at head-fi.

I like the M-Stage, in fact I like it quite a bit more than a certain recently departed amp. IMO it sounds better and costs less than half as much, how could you go wrong? :D
Oh, and it's a better size with a nicer volume control.

Oh man, I'm loving this article that was linked to http://www.nousaine.com/pdfs/Wired%20Wisdom.pdf

In case no one else saw it, another rather long entry in the same vein. I didn't get anywhere near the end, but the point was clear.

http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/05/sub ... ebate.html

Interesting, and I can see his point, and when I saw HF banned blind testing discussion a long while back, I came to realise that site is fucked for any reliable information, never mind the high fanboi numbers (not to mention the high fanbois).

However, I'm not a geek either, and don't objectively evaluate numbers/capability when listening to gear. I have to trust my ears, because I'm listening for what I like. I recently had a listen to both the Matrix and Concerto and there's no doubt the Concerto is a better product. But the Matrix is no slouch and is a good sounding amp for the money. The important decisions instead are:

Is the difference worth it - to me?
What can I realistically afford?
Am I ever going to own the sort of phones that will reap all the benefits of a top end amp?
Are cheap gain switches on the underside a dealbreaker?
Do the phones I have all sound nice with the cheaper product?
Will I notice a real world difference when I've got used to the sound of the cheaper product?
Is the cheaper product still better than what I currently have?

While I have no love for Head-Fi and the RSA lovefest, keyboard warrior is EXACTLY what he strikes me as. He is always right, no explanation is ever good enough, and one single data point is enough to prove himself right.

If you are going to do scientific measurements, you have to do them right. I don't trust a single one of his measurements.

Even a year ago, I would have, but I am so completely past the point where I have to argue on the internet about toys. It is both liberating and disappointing.

Nearly every ban I've received at head-fi has been made because I was posting facts in an offensive manner (deal with it, pricks)

That site is such a laugh. Funnily enough it was mostly Kwkarth

PS Ray Samuels is a prick and having experienced one of his amplifiers, would not go out of my way to buy one
stuff (rarely) -> my head (sometimes) -> music (always)
