If you were starting out again...

Post by Belial » Mon Nov 14, 2011 8:07 pm

As a thought experiment... say you were starting out from scratch with a budget that would let you replace your existing setup. What would you buy? How closely would it match your current setup?

For me (not counting the iPad/phone) my budget would be about $2500. I'd buy:

Work:
- DT250

Home:
- DT531 (or DT250 if I couldn't find any)
- MS-1 with bowl pads

Portable:
- M3

That's somewhere around $1k. I might throw in the m-stage+DACMagic if I was feeling spendy.

Although I love them, I don't think I'd re-buy the DT880 or MS-Pro. More and more at home I find myself just using the 531 and only grabbing the other two when the mood strikes. Too much money for too little use.

I would've skipped buying the Maverick D1 (last time I listen to HF) and gone straight for the DacMagic/M-stage or something similar.

Phone wise, I'm pretty happy with the DT250 for my desktop. I'll probably get the AD900's down the road if the house gets a lot less noisy. The MS-1's were a gift so they're pretty valuable to me :)

For portables, I wouldn't have gotten the D2, save up a little more and gone straight for the J3

Well if you gave me a budget of $1000, this would be my setup:

Headphones:
- Portable: Audio-Technica ATH-ES7
- Home: Alessandro MS-1

Source:
- Sansa Clip+
- DACmagic

Probably not even close to $800, but that's really all I need, unless I find a pair of headphones that can really give me the "wow factor" as soon as I put it on and play something. I blame my Alessandro MS-1's ridiculously good performance for not letting me experience that :P

I'd go straight for my current setup, since I'm very happy with it.

I might add some speakers, but anyway.

I'm pretty happy with mine, as I took some time to put some of it together, and was able to hear everything at length before buying.

Possibly would have skipped the RS2 for DT880. But then, I'd have wanted an RS2...

Is that a thousand bucks for the whole lot ? I'd have to start again at the source, but that was mostly CDPs when I got here and I prefer a hard-drive based setup.

It's whatever your current setup is worth - ie for me it's $2.5k.

Yes, I did. Well, not hate, but found it too lean and clean. But a listen recently and I liked it more. But 4 headphones is plenty, I'm already spoilt for choice.

Heh. They are pretty awesome for a lot of stuff, and at $400 they're quite good value. Pretty sure I'd take the 250 over them though.

OK, I've probably spent enough to 'swap it' for this:

http://www.jhaudio.com/product/jh16-pro ... 3a-dsp-amp

The whole thing is under 2K USD - just need a decent source and, theoretically, it should all be good. I just dont know whether custom IEMs would be as 'comfortable' as people seem to claim, but I guess you dont find out till you are prepared to shell out for impressions etc.
