media player on linux

Postby droenn » Sun Jan 29, 2012 10:30 am

I think there was a thread on this before, but I couldn't find it.

I've just switched over to linux (Ubuntu because I wanted to get into it quickly and easily) and now need a replacement for foobar. The banshee media player that's packaged with it is OK, but was wondering if there's a more audiophile-centered program?

Everything else is sweet though, loving how sleek Ubuntu is now (I tried it a few years back and found it cumbersome).

or in terminal

1 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexey-smirnov/deadbeef
2 sudo apt-get update
3 sudo apt-get install deadbeef

forgot to mention Clementine, when Amarok went into the 2.x versions the project forked and Clementine was born retaining the 1.4 version traits

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:me-davidsansome/clementine

The best thing about this program is the "kittens" feature which makes all the album art pictures of cats

there's also http://www.tomahawk-player.org/ now. Had a look at the windows version of it and it's promising but still fairly early stages yet.

I tried Guayadeque and didn't like it much. Can't remember why.

I'm actually using Subsonic a lot at the moment. It lets me stream my home music collection to anywhere over the web.
