Do you buy 2K+ DSLRs and 5K lenses ?

Postby grevillea » Fri Jun 29, 2012 12:43 pm

You dont ? Then why the hell is there a camera franchise on every corner in the CBD of every city in Oz ? Specialist Hi-Fi is dead as a dodo outside of Leederville, WA and the odd shop here and there, yet people will happily hand over megabucks for camera gear. Happy to hear your explanations and apologies, camera nuts.

I dont know what that is, but I cant tell that you NEED one. And a Talisman T-33H. I happen to know where you can get the latter.

Yes very good question. Personally I'm not a photo enthusiast and wouldn't spend that much on DSLR or lenses. However, I did end up getting a new Canon compact camera recently when I went overseas (which by the way does take excellent photos for the price I paid) which was 12.1MP and 20x optical zoom. But that was because the very old camera I had kept locking up and I had to remove/re-insert the batteries to reset it.

I guess it's because photography is a profession for quite a few people and a hobby for many others. And maybe they want to take advantage of the tourists that come over and need a camera/accessories to take all those holiday snaps.

5d mk3 is a 3500 dollar camera :P

i think the thing with cameras though, people like to take photos, like to think they take good photos and the only reason why their photos don't look pro grade is coz they have crappy cameras and that an expensive slr is going to automatically make their photos look awesome, not knowing that unfortunately that's not the case, add that slr's are getting much more affordable these days so they sell like hot cakes

audio on the other hand, to the majority music is just music, when i tried to explain to my friends why i spent the money on my speakers and headphones i get a look like i am crazy, people just don't know what music is supposed to sound like and to them spending more than 20 bux on a pair of iphone buds is wasting money

Yeah - beats me. I can only assume that rents in the Perth CBD are as outrageous as they are in SYD/MEL/BNE (Adelaide has been on a steady decline for years, so I wont go there), yet these chains seem to be able to make rent/payroll etc at a time when all we hear is how tough it is for niche retail atm. If anything, I would have thought the entry-level buyers would go straight for the cheapest option, and I assumed that would be via Google. The other obvious issue is floorspace - you can fit an entire display cabinet in the space that would be occupied by a few pairs of floorstander speakers.

Because professional photographers are more common than professional headphone listeners?

To the original question, yes.

I had 20k worth of gear with me when I was shooting fashion.

20k ? At the risk of offending you grev, that actually sounds like a modest outlay for a professional photographer.

Not really, it's about right actually (for what I did). Anybody that tells you different are elitest or non-pros that thinks spending more makes you a better photographer.

Beats me - when I think about it, the guy who told me about his former bosses studio was from the Gold Coast. All sounded pretty wanky to me - strutting around in Hugo Boss suits - but the Coast IS Disneyland. If Disneyland had hundreds of violent criminals dealing drugs 24/7, that is.

Fuck the gold coast. Last time I was going down there, first thing I said when we were near Southport was "The air has changed, it's smelly sluttier."

And also stupid finance people would rather base in the gold coast than here, lame.

Actually I do like the high rises, reminds me of 1/100 of Hong Kong. :P

If you transplanted the Coast's crime rate to HK, your beloved Asian city would look a lot like this:

Too many people, too few jobs - despite the efforts of your finance gurus and other Brissie rejects. Its Logan-by-the-sea.
