Beyer DT-1990 & Audiolab MDAC. Worth getting an Amp?

Postby PlumpDJ » Tue Apr 18, 2017 7:41 pm

Howdy,

I currently have a pair of Beyer DT-1990s which I often run from an Audiolab M-DAC. Just wondering if
there was much point getting an amp upgrade?

Thanks

Any dedicated amp stage is more likely to be a sidegrade really. You might be able to squeeze a little bit extra out of them but for the price you could get another pair of headphones which will give you a completely different flavour offering much greater relative difference in sound quality :)
The 1990 are super efficient - more power isn't going to do much. Maybe going a nice dual mono class A stage would give a touch more channel separation adding to soundstage a bit, maybe it won't.

Hey Marcus..

Thanks for the reply.

My spider senses already suspected it would be more of a side grade then a real upgrade... certainly the cost of a decent amp gets you a totally different sound if you grabbed another pair of headphones.

When it comes to headphone amp stages I'm kind of a get-and-forget kind of guy. As in I get something decent and leave it unless I change headphones to something that absolutely needs a different amp stage, but that's pretty rare IMO.
