A *really* neutral map is very expensive, so we're told. It's the audiophile end game, to ensure that all potential artefacts are minimised. Also a load of wank IMO. My first amp had plenty of grunt but wasn't too refined, clearly boom-tish. Is that colour or just poor sound? The Matrix doesn't have that mid range hole. Is that colour or simply better delivery of power allowing the phones to sound smoother/as they were meant to?

To my ears, the very nice Talisman isn't any more neutral, it does sound a little different though.
I'm with drubbing - how many of us have actually heard a ruler-flat neutral amp ? When I say 'coloration', I'm not talking Bose, but most commercial amp makers soon realise that their customers want something warmer - remember the KICAS and its sibling, the Caliente ? I saw an early post from the amp's designer admitting that they had to offer the Caliente because customers were complaining that the KICAS needed more warmth - for all I know, they stuck a different name on the same amp and convinced people that it was 'warmer', but it worked .........

So the reason you don't want an neutral amp is because they're expensive, even though we're talking about one that $100.

The logic, I does not follow.

No, I don't want an expensive neutral amp, hence the almost $200 outlay for the EPH-02. If I was going to spend a thousand dollars on an amp, it would absolutely need to have tube-like coloration. Alternatively, I would need much better sources/phones. Swings and roundabouts, I guess.

Hold on! Hold on!

Are we talking objective neutrality, or subjective neutrality?
Or are we comparing the subjective neutrality of different objectively neutral amps?
Or are we objectively trying to determine what is subjectively neutral based on objective measurements of subjective criteria?

ps. My dad's amp is more neutral than your dad's amp.

My decals and pictures add some metallic sound to the amp because of the silver/grey color scheme I used.

If you guys want some warmer sounding decals, tell me and I'll make orange/yellow colours for you.

I direct you to the following post on hype-fi as it explains much better than I could what I think:

And to the lazy ones amongst you: true neutrality to me is simply to reflect the recording accurately, which the O2 should do according to nwavguy.

Pretty much, but it doesn't end there, it should be accurate - meaning if there is bass deliver bass, if there isn't don't (as an example).
