Finally got mine, what's the metal cylinder thing for the PSU wallwart?

Feels like a way to introduce EMI =/

Those things come with video cameras too. God knows why, never used them. PITA.

Yeah I get it. Quick wiki explains it. Pretty clever fix for a cheap PSU =p

Goddamn this is tempting, even though from what I gather the M-Stage would be roughly on par with my O1. Ugh.

What's with the new M-stage? I heard it has a USB DAC built in?

Does anyone with direct experience know which headphone amp brings out the best bass response in the AKG K-702's? Also does anyone know anything about the upcoming CA Dacmagic Plus's headphone out capabilities? Will it be able to hold it's own with the K-702's & Senn HD-650's?

I own a Dacmagic (current model) but I'm intending to upgrade to the Plus when it arrives, at the moment I'm using the TC Electronic Impact Twin as a temporary headphone amp, it's designed for recording vocals & instruments into a Mac/PC via Firewire but has it's own DA convertor similar to the Apogee Duet if not better. This is more than 'loud' enough but volume is one thing & 'quality' of sound is another. I might add that the TC Impact Twin IS a quality device but not one that is [solely] intended as a headphone amp.. or DAC.

Am I generally wasting my money if I buy a stand-alone HP-amp given the existing mentioned gear?
If I should buy something like a Little Dot tube HP-amp or one of the myriad other tube amps out there would that be a wise choice for the extremely light sounding K-702's?

I ordered a set of Senn HD-650's a couple of days ago after being dis-satisfied with the K-702's bass response (or lack of), so if I do buy a HP-amp I'll want one that works with both & swap phones back & forth according to the style/genre of music I'm listening to.

Given you've a DACmagic, I'd suggest upgrading to the Plus is a downgrade in spending smart. While it's prbably good gear, all it's got is a head stage and a few feature tweaks. You'd be better off spending less to upgrade, and adding the M-Stage to your set up.

If you don't like the AKGs, sell them (use funds to offset amp purchase). Nothing short of EQing the bass will pump it up. And I dare say they're not the sort of phone that will deliver EQd sound that well.

Agree, while upgrading and new models are nice, it's not likely to be much better sound wise and may actually be worse falling into an all in one category, although CA make pretty good gear.

I'd just get a better amp for the 650s, the DAC is fine.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the DACMagic+ headphone out stage is not as good as what you'd get from the M-stage, or: the DACMatrix combo is likely to be the better performer.

Other points have been covered, there's no headphone amp that will make the K702 bassy, however some will make the bass more apparent. The HD650 are going to sound like bass cannons by comparison - I would have suggested the DT880 as a contender.

while the the bass on the K(Q)701/2 is hardly what I would consider huge, it's certainly not bad

inadequate amping will cause the bass (and pretty much all aspects of the K(Q)701/2 to sound like crap

they're a real pain to drive because they require lots of voltage AND current to sound good. the voice coil also uses variable widths in its construction so also poses a constantly variable impedance load to the amp. it's quite a complicated headphone.

like Marcus said the HD650 will sound like doof doof by comparison, and Beats by Dr Dre may be more up your alley
