I'm not sure if I'm willing to put 1k in audio again.

You're lucky you get a fair bit for 1k with headphone audio, don't get much for 1k if it was home theatre or car audio .

With 1k I could buy the right side of a B&W 703 and run it from the onboard

I got a pair Paradigm titans and a yamaha receiver for around $1k.

You still can get quite a bit for $1k.

Apparently, yes, but it's not a comparison I've done.

pretty significant difference imo. Didn't think so at first, but after a couple of months I switched back to stx and it was a step down.

Agree, it's very noticeable and offers better instrument separation (at least from my x-fi). The fact you need an amp also helps the sound, but at least it doesn't sound like a sound card.
