I was going to see if there was a Fiio DAC in the same price range, but most of the Fiios don't have product descriptions up :(

E10 or E7 both a bit more than the Hifiman, but quite good.

Ok, I lent one to a friend who is your completely stereotypical "average user" - compared to his laptop onboard he says it sounds "way better" :)

I think I might get this then just to see how much it improves over my onboard.

Right now can't afford anything pricey in the near future. Maybe even in the pretty far future. :P

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm trying to work out where this product fits in?

The HM-101 lives in the Products / Sources / Soundcards section of the website. It also has a USB DAC.
Other products that have a USB DAC live in the Products / Amps area. However, none of these are in the Products / Amps / DAC area.

I don't see the HM-101 as being a source (like the Rocoo-P for example), but I'm not sure if it actually amplifies the audio, or just produces better quality audio?

Always keen to learn more.

Some products are designed primarily as Amps and have a DAC, others vice versa. It's a question of the priority the maker has made on its main use.

A DAC is a Soundcard - they do the same thing, they're both sources. Every MP3 player on the market has a DAC and an amp inside, they are also sources.

The HM-101 is something that I've been wanting for a while, a source for use with Laptops and headphones up to the $150 range without breaking the bank.

About the categories, well we've been bugging Marcus to fix that for a while :P
