PC Speakers

Postby ArbPotatoes » Tue Nov 17, 2009 5:05 pm

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a decent set of PC speakers on the cheap. Looking at the $80-150 price point. I know that's not a lot to play with, but I'm not looking for the best quality speakers ever, just the best I can get for the price. I need them for playing music and gaming. Should I go for 2.0, 2.1 or 5.1? What's the best set in my price point?

Thanks.

If you can stretch to $169, you can buy the Logitech z-2300.

Certainly not 'audiophile' quality by any means, but at that price range, there's not much that sound acceptable. They have a huge emphasis on bass, but it's the cleanest bass I've heard in the price bracket (by far).

Out of the STX, it sounds pretty good and everything is clean without distortion. I noticed a huge difference when I plugged these into my laptop and ten the STX.

It does lack in the mids department, but what do you expect? :)

I'm only saying from a music perspective because I don't play games, so I can't help in that area, sorry.

Look up Edifier S330D. Maybe hard to found in Oz but I have a set here in Malaysia, the sound reminds me a lot of the Audioengine 2 which costs twice as much

wariszoor, I lived in Adelaide for two years, and I've been to Malaysia twice - even in the fog that forms my reality, I seem to recall that they were a considerable distance from one another. Have you done a Beefy to Malaysia ?

(fwiw, 5 weeks from tonite I will be sitting in a hotel in Georgetown : it cant come soon enough).

Well quite, except I managed to haul all my audio gear here in one go. TBH not a very nice time of the year to come up here really, for weeks it has been raining every evening, worse stuff happening northside (Georgetown should be allright though). Just now a gale wind uprooted a few trees from where I live.

I can help :D
yeh, z-2300's are great for most casual gaming and movies although they're not the best i'd certainly recommend 2.1 over 5.1 if you're just using them for the computer.
they're also good for gaming, but if you're the serious kind (fps games) then you should stick to some headphones for the advantage over teh n00bz.

If you're on a tight budget, aside from the logitech Z-2300...the Logitech Z-5 are good speakers with decent sound.

I liked the sound of a friend's Logitech Z4s, but they may be in the upper ranges of price.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, as I've been tempted by the Audioengine A2s or P4s and wouldn't mind a nicer/easier to obtain alternate. :)

One choice is entry level or second hand studio monitors.

Those LSK M4 are getting a good mention on the other threads, but you need an amp.

I wouldn't mind an amp that had a headphone out jack to override the speakers (or A-B selector) and possibly something to run the soundcard into using spdif. Anyone think of anything?

Going to have a hard time with the headphone jack on the speakers, really you would want a headphone amp with pre-amp functionality. That'd do nicely.

Cool, figured as much may as well get a nice headphone amp with a line out for the speakers.

I noticed the T3-H isn't listed anymore, whats the deal there?
On the T31-H page it says 'Stereo RCA Out for line-through' would that power some speakers?

Talisman seem to be having issues supplying product...

That's just a loop output, ie. directly connected to the input. So goes to active speakers, or and integrated amp, etc. Just so you have both plugged in at the same time and choose what you want to use, no different electrically to using y-cables.

I was thinking of getting the Cambridge 640A to power some M4s.

Apparently it has a headphone out with similar/equivalent SQ to the Corda Arietta (predecessor to the swing). I heard this from beefy a while back...
