Also, does is there anyone who does y2 kits? I'm REALLY curios on how the DIY dac offerings compare with commercial ones like Dacmagic and V-dac.

I love my dacmagic, but sometimes I think what if I could cut out all those input option to just usb, 2 rca outs and have the psu inside the case, while keeping the performance. How sweet of a dac would that be! Also cut the output to something smaller like 1.1V rms.

edit, could we rename this thread as the "General audio DIY thread to post builds and ask questions?" , or should we start a new thread for that? I'd love to post my recent ESW9 recable and my rca to mini cable :D.

pretty sure glassjaraudio does M3 kits, just got to email through

his website on geocities used to have all the latest goods but geocities shut down =\

might as well ask about the y2 kit while you're at it, and let us all know =D

If they don't offer a kit - you might be able to source all non-AMB parts through farnell.
I've put a few orders through them recently and quite impressed.

Farnell were traditionally known for good service, but pretty average prices(compared to going overseas).
Recently a lot of their prices have come down noticably, and now also free freight on all web orders - toll priority too, next day FTW.
The order multiples for some lines are a little high for the average DIYer, but most is pretty good.
Anyway, I've noticed Farnell has tuned their business to be more attractive for the little guy, and this is good news for us ;)

Yeah I recently got some RCAs from farnell, what a quick and pain free experience! Wish they would carry more parts like their US and UK counterparts but.

I think I might be getting a little ahead of my self with the y2.

I saw a post on HF of a double mini3 with a TREAD, what would the benifit of that be? Also, would it be worth going the route of making a TREAD for the mini 3 so I don't need to get a walwart for it? I initially though of making the mini3 for warm up and selling it off, but I'm thinking if I like it's performance I might make a TREAD for it and build a y2 later on to make a "easy to transport" rig for backup.

No. The mini3 runs an onboard regulator, so unless you're going to change the onboard power supply of the mini3 to suit, you're not going to improve anything. So you could build the mini3 as a desktop solution, using an external power supply, but that just seems retarded to me - just be different for the hell of it, unless you want a really small desktop amp for whatever reason.

Ah thanks dingo, now I feel even more noobie!

I wonder if anyone has ever built a y2 with a mini3 in one chasis as a nice entry compact system for bedside or work.

Maybe. It would be a nice little unit.

Got to be careful with grounding. The y2 runs a 'real' ground versus the virtual ground on the Mini3.

ooh, a mini3/y2 combo would be cool...'careful with grounding'...does that mean it's easy and you have to be careful...or is it logistically too difficult to bother?
