So what's the cheapest way to go about making holes in a case for the jacks etc? Both kits are on their way here, though I had to get a case for the CKKII from RS as Jeff doesn't supply them.

The costs are petty good right now, the CKKIII is running to $170 inc everything, but I'm not sure how much case work will cost me...

What profession are you in Beefy? Can commoners like us, with zip-all experience, work our way up to this DIY somehow?
If I had known then, what I know now.

They sure can! I don't do anything closely related to DIY, but so far I've made a DT250 cable, RCA to mini and recabled my ESW9s!

Of course you can :). You just have to start small and work on your skills and trouble shooting methods.

Drill the closest size hole you can(or multiple holes) then use a cheap hobby file set to finish it off if it's an odd size. If you got aluminium or plastic panels then this shouldn't be too hard - if you've got half a brain and some degree of hand eye co-ordination. Most importantly though is the patience, which is what most people(self included), lack.

No, its a very elite club. You have to be nominated by a member in good standing, take a written and verbal test, then pay a membership fee. Then there is an elaborate and intrusive hazing ritual involving a very large 'soldering iron' coated with plenty of 'flux'. Be careful, because the 'solder' gets everywhere.

Avoid steel planels...... oh for the love of god, avoid steel. Steel is tough even with a drill press.

Most importantly though is the patience, which is what most people(self included), lack.

This. That is why I will now use FPE for pretty much everything. Casework takes way too much time, needing tools I don't have, to get results that I can easily get better from somebody else. I prefer to focus my time on the electronics, wiring and project functionality.

Still, if you're building a project in a Hammond box, it is very easy with a drill press or even a hand drill.

2nd this, post was GOLD    .

Yeah I ordered a Hammod case Beefy, so I guess casework should be easier. Hmm maybe Bunnings or another hardware store would be kind enough to drill the holes in the case so I don't have to spend money on a drill myself.

Casework sucks bad. I'm wickedly close to Beefy's approach of using FPE but held back by cheap-ass laziness. My first MilletMAX is back in regular use, sans front panel, rear panel, case top, on/off switch and input RCAs...The lack of case does allow the bias currents to be pushed a little bit though

Drill press is pretty handy if you anticipate a few cases. I use a fairly cheap Ryobi that I got for cheap by bouncing Mitre 10 against Bunnings.

With you all the way there my friend ;) But I'm just held back by cheap-ass laziness in general LOL Haven't gone so far as to order parts/PCB yet

HA! I imagine the MiniMaxes got finished at the very least...... ;)

You should at least do the front and rear panels. 15 minutes at most. The top panel takes a lot longer though, and you have nowhere to hide any bad holes. I did mine by hand - took almost 3 hours

MiniMaxes are a thing of incredible beauty. The only issue I have with them is I think the channels are backwards on one and the volume knob needs shortening.

I know its simple for the big Max, I just can't really be bothered. That and I really enjoy being probably the only person in the world running 80mA for BJT max...for now. Ideally I'd get some sort of mesh that can be used and maintain airflow. Or pull my finger out and build a MOSFET-MAX...or finish the M3...y2...Bijou...F4...F5...Chipamp...My_Ref Rev C...UGS preamp...Mar-kel's...

Crap. Ambition far in excess of ability and unction.
