In need of a DAC

Postby Iamwhereimat » Thu May 12, 2011 1:51 pm

I am looking around for a DAC and i am just wondering if there are any 'cant-go-wrong' DACs, im not really fussed if it is portable or not, a DAC amp combo would be nice, but again i am not really that bothered. Thanks.

Price range? Features? Connectivity?

it can be a little tricky depending on what you want and how much you want to spend, but straight off the bat i'd say Cambridge DacMagic http://headphones.com.au/psingle?productID=451

Awesome quality for the price. Tried, tested and loved by many forum members on here. Good range of features and good connectivity options too.

haha oh yes :S price range under $600, features: preferably with headphone out(so i dont have to buy an amp) good sound, connectivity: USB for use with laptop/desktop :)
yes i looked at the DACmagic, and have heard some pretty good reviews, but doesnt have headphone out, so ill have to buy a decent amp :/

If i'm wrong someone will correct me soon enough, but....

If you are buying any standalone DAC you will need an amp. You cannot run headphones off the DAC by itself, some intermediary is needed to boost (amp) the line-level signal coming from the DAC. The only way to avoid buying a standalone amp is to buy an DAC/amp combo like you mentioned. However if you're going to be spending that much, it is best to separate your DAC and amp needs and buy two standalone units anyway.

So if you are interested in a DAC you are also interested in an amp, the question is whether or not it is combined or standalone.

I'm also interested in knowing what's available within Australia.

Recently got an DAC/amp combo when I was traveling abroad. Loving it so far, but one can always use some options!

It's only a portable DAC/amp. Nothing as highend as the DACmagic suggested above.

You need some thing better. Expensive phones don't do it all by themselves.
