I'd give up on contacting LSK, have you gone to see Trilby at Billy Hyde in North Perth? (say hi for me). He's got some good alternatives worth checking out or may also have some other ideas of what to look at.

Sadly, I live in Sydney :(
I might start looking around Music Stores, most of them around here dont have budget solutions and focus more on the 1k+ systems tho

Yeah, but I recommend the local one specifically as I know Trilby gives excellent advice and knows what he's talking about :)

once you listen to the HS80M the others just aren't anywhere near as good.
So do yourself a favor and don't listen to them :unibrow:
Tempting to try and make room for them. Not the most classic looking bookshelf speaker (like some of the expensive passives) but by no means bad. I think the HS50's with a sub would be ok too, just dont have the same mids/highs or separation (and basically no bottom end subbase).

I'm thinking active (powered) speakers may be easier and better than an integrated amp + passive bookshelves, as they are tuned to give a sound whereas matching amp and speakers yourself seems a bit hit and miss with the resultant sound. An integrated amp would give you a remote though, then again would only control volume but could test out the foobar android/iphone remote control but may be too troublesome.

Seems like the headphone outputs aren't much good either on entry level integrated amps..

Just tried out the A2's
These tiny things sound huuuuge.
The midbass hump is a bit fatiguing though, cuz it tends to drown everything out. Maybe I should put some foam under them?

I actually emailed a store about the HS80M's and they said to allow 30cm to the wall, otherwise you could have them slightly less and make up a foam baffle or something. Same could apply for other rear ported speakers (like the A5's).

Sounds like a good solution the attenuator would be pretty handy and you could always add the sub later. They would be far better than any computer speakers so not surprised you are happy with the sound. The HS80M are pretty massive for a desk. I'd probably get some stands for them i guess. Have found an online shop that sell the HS80M for $750 a pair pp which is great, still not ready to get a pair yet though.

Cheers,

yea that's exactly what i was thinking, could always add the sub later if i wanted one, which is why i got the hs50m over krk rokit 5 (which sounded 'veiled' or 'muffled')

the hs80m is going to be awesome! and i think it's a good idea on a stand, my current problem is that firstly speakers bit too close together (yamaha recommends 1.5m apart) which i think is affecting soundstage and also vibration on the table is messing up lower end and mids a bit (not coming out as clean) so probably will be getting some speaker isolation pads soon

Stands would be nice if they allow you to separate the speakers a bit more (and save space on your desk) those diffuser pads may not be a bad idea for either speaker.

They are like the MSPros of desktop speakers, they are really quite ridiculous.

Aktimate mini's and Swan h4 are apparently to be the bee's knee's for desktop speakers under $1000

The Mini's can be had under $500 at some places are the H4's are about $500 aswell

I recently heard the mini's and was impressed but have not heard the h4's though.. Word is there better than the mkIII's....

Hi Marcus,

Just wondering if you listened to the Event 20/20 MKIII when you were auditioning monitors? They are front ported which would be handy for my desk and apparently not quite as bright as the Yamaha or Dynaudio. Thoughts? I'd be happy with either the Yamaha are a bit cheaper :).

I'm not sure - there were 5-6 sets of powered monitors that I listened to, up to around $2k - I didn't like the higher ones, the Yamahas had a more pleasant balance to me overall.

Wasn't that picky, to be honest - I have them in a far from ideal setup where I basically just wanted it to sound good despite the shitty positioning (on top of shelves).

End result : love it. Haven't bothered shopping around/reading reviews since because I like what I hear and just want to get on with listening :)
Friends and family love it too - whenever I tell people how much my setup costs they're blown away (netbook, DAC and powered monitors).
Oh, and not that I have foobar2000controller on my phone I can control everything from my phone (wifi) around the house :)
