MW3 biggest 'anything' in history ...

Postby grevillea » Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:35 pm

Some of you may have caught the news item, but Activision claim that MW3 outgrossed Avatar, reaching the mystical 1 billion USD mark in a mere 16 days. Of course, in any tale, there are winners and losers:

Yep, nothing like a millionaire (do Kiwi dollars count ?) going to jail for internet piracy. I suspect that losing his MW3 ranking might be fairly low on his list of concerns right now - reality is a bitch.

I'm pretty sure manure sales worldwide are way higher than that.

Read yesterday that Activision are considering turning COD into a subscription service rather than an annual release. Makes sense seeing as each new MW is really just character model polishing and new map packs.

Many years ago, I was forced to help my mother shovel cow dung into bags for the garden. It was hideous.

Fast forward to 2005, and I found myself in Bunnings paying good money for bags of the same substance for my garden.

Stop the planet - I need to get off.

I take the view that Call of Duty can only go down. Maybe not next game...but Activision will flogged it to death. Maybe then some. It's death will be genre killing, or at least hurt it for a little while. Because they've burnt out their entire player base, just like they did with certain rhythm game.

It's not for me to judge folks who do enjoy CoD, there are a lot of them. But everyone is capable of cynicism and vulnerable to burn out.

When CoD trips, (you can't set records forever). Oooo the drama.
Also, comparing a 99.00 game to a cinema ticket isn't reasonable. Avatar is nearly 3hrs. I suspect the value for money per hour is better than the average shooter (single player). (Also, Australia Tax)

A copy of MW3 costs about 10 times as much as a ticket to Avatar, wonder if they took that into account (no need to wonder)

Yeah, but manure isn't often purchased for its entertainment value alone...

I think that would be the part about 'first to a billion $$$$ sales'. Doesnt matter how you get there, its when you get there ...

High end audio seems to consist of people who are much happier selling 20 10K components a month than 200 1K components - I expect that saves on shipping.

I think what matters to them is the margins and that is what is so significant here. MW3 or any AAA game sells for way more than a movie ticket but they also cost less than the big budget movies to develop. I bet MW3 didn't even cost half of what Avatar was to develop.

Good point. We had a couple of very successful games houses in Oz, but things went south when our dollar went north, leaving a lot of supposedly happy game developers complaining that they were working 16-hour days in 'sweatshops' : I like games, but the thought of being forced to sit in front of a monitor for that length of time, 6 days a week - no thanks ....
