Canalphones with iPhone control

Postby Ninja Catfish » Thu Mar 15, 2012 12:37 am

I looked around, and it doesn't appear this question has been answered elsewhere.

I want new in-ear headphones/canalphones for use with my iPhone.
I currently use Apple In-Ear Headphones, and have been reasonably happy with them, though one speaker has started to crackle at certain frequencies so I'm looking to get a new set.
I'm hoping to get a set that is better quality than the Apple In-Ears, hoping to spend $150 or less if possible, and I very much want the set to have in-line remote/mic.
That last requirement seems to be the biggest limiting factor I encounter.

Thing is, I've become so accustomed to changing track/adjusting volume with the Apple remote, that it would be very hard to go back to needing to pull the phone out of my pocket to pause/skip etc. I've seen the Ultimate Ears 700's recommended highly, but without the remote I'm very hesitant. I will go for a remote-less one if need be, but it'd be a last resort.

Any recommendations?

I went through the same thing when I first started using non-Apple headphones. After a few days you do get used to it. The only thing I really miss is being able to pause music in a second.

Etymotic HF3 would be your best option, there's also the Shure SE115+, Brainwavz M4w/mic, or Etymotic MC3
All of which will sound better than the Apples ;)

There aren't many headphones I've ever used that sound worse than stock-apple 'phones. (Except for maybe the ones you're offered on long flights).

Oh, I'm not using stock Apple phones. They're... ugh. I can actually not stand using them. Uncomfortable and sound terrible!
I'm using their in-ear set, which are *much* better. I just figure I might as well take this opportunity to go one better.

Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone!

On the Etymotics hf3's, would they be overkill? The iPhone itself will be driving them (no external amplification), and the music will be 256k AAC files (mainly rock, but some electronic and classical thrown in as well).

(First post club yay)
I'm also after canalphones with mic and music control for under $100.
I own brainwavz m3 so I'm thinking of getting the m4's. How is the m4's build and sound quality?
How about ATH-CK400i or a-jays? I've never used jays before so would you recommend them?
I mostly listen to alternative, rock and the like.

They're quite good. I can't speak on their longevity so much just yet but they seem fine to me and I haven't seen any return with faults
For something else you could also consider the Etymotic MC2 for higher isolation and a different sound signature. Also very well built with a 2 year warranty
