Not sure if it helps, but I've read the Shure SM57 is a great mic for instruments, while the SM58 is superb for vocals at their price range. Roughly $200 each if I'm not mistaken.

Okay, thanks. But the first thing I'm looking for is a full set for my drums.

Maybe you'd want to consider these?

What about a drum kit? Or a nice guitar? But it looks like you'll need some more room though...

I'm not too interested in learning gutiar. It's easy enough to replicate on bass, and I prefer the sound of chords on other instruments, or spread out, rather than on guitar. It's also quite easy to find a guitarist

I've got a bunch of actual instruments (I can saxophone and clarinet at a professional jazz level, for example, and my bass and piano skills are getting there), but I'm more interested in collecting more synths atm
matt_d_19 wrote:I need foam too. Where would you recommend I get it?

I'd actually recommend you get it from a company that specialises in foam for non-acoustic reasons (i.e. don't buy brand name foam). It's significantly cheaper, and it's pretty much the same stuff; as you can probably see I settled for 2" wedge cuts for most of my stuff (and 1" egg crate for my little binaural setup).

If you're looking for isolation, you can either go for fibreglass (just a warning: working with it is bad for your lungs, so definitely cover it in fabric), or neoprene (a type of foam/rubber)

I haven't played in a long time, changing that soon - final wrist scans and diagnosis is in, no news is good news so I can go back to abusing my wrist as much as I want now.

Next on my to-get list is a Minikorg 700 :D

Sweet.
I'm looking at getting a vintage wavetable synth next. Probably a waldorf Microwave XT or an Ensoniq Fizmo. Expecting to pay upwards of 1k incl shipping for them though :crybaby:. I'll have to get the keyboard fizmo, because the rack is too rare/expensive. Last I saw it went for over 3x the price of the board

Oh that's nice :)

Ah Ensoniq, back in the day where Creative didn't own and shelve everything good.

Does anyone have studio racks? I was looking at getting a smaller one for the purpose of portability.

Gator shock cases look great, but they're very pricey. I was looking at local options that use ABS plastic, but I dunno

Oh, they're cheap! I was expecting to spend hundreds on an Audix or Shure set.
What's so good about those? I don't really get the beach theme...

Also, what would you recommend for a full set up for recording drums and bass? Mics, mixer, etc. For around 1k or a little more.

I see. Still, worth giving it a shot! Some songs just aren't complete without guitar.

Oh, wow, so you pretty much play everything? Well, except for drums. ;)
Trust me, start playing - they're the most enjoyable instrument (in my opinion, of course!). I could help you pick a nice and shiny new kit. :D
Watch this and say you don't want to drum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCbPapIu7Qw
I saw him at a live clinic once, even more amazing. :)

What do you like so much about synths!?

Okay, thanks. Any place in particular? Clark Rubber?

Awesome! I know how it feels to be away from your instrument for a long time. ;)

Very nice! Still, over a grand for a synth doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

They're basically a resale of the electret capsules you find in expensive measurement microphones from Earthworks, DPA etc. I'm extremely happy with mine

I'm assuming you're going to use a lot of mics (tom/snare/kick/overhead). It's quite hard to find a micpre and ADC for all that. I use a line audio micpre (8 channel) and audiofire 12 (12 channel, since i run other stuff through there).

I have a Mandala drum and a korg wavedrum. I actually want to get into middle-eastern percussion like Riq, Cajon etc because I like the timbres much more than a kit. But I want to learn a lot of weird crap (especially chinese zithers and indian flutes/bansuri). Likewise, I enjoy the timbre of synths.

I got my foam from a factory in the US. I was actually importing fairly expensive stuff and used it as padding, amongst other things to save on shipping. It only cost about $100 for something like 100 square feet.

I've spent way too much money on music

Would you recommend any model in particular? The U-D drum one for drumming, I assume. But then what about kick and overheads?

I'm quite confused with all of the other stuff, though. There's so much information out there!
So, I think I want an interface mixer (looks a lot easer than getting an interface and an analogue mixer). So, if I get that and mics, do I still need a micpre or anything else?

The Mandala drum is really cool. Still nothing like a drum kit. ;)
There's a lot more to drumming than the regular timbres of the kit. Add dynamics, playing styes, cymbals, etc. and you get to see how broad the sounds of the drum kit are. And you can add some percussion like pandero, cowbell, tambourine, timbales to your kit.
Have you watched that Stanton Moore video that I showed you? Because that's exactly what I'm talking about. He's got a pandero to the left of the hats and a cowbell mounted to the bass drum.

I want to learn percussion like that too, but it's a good idea to be good at drumming first. ;)

Thanks for your help with foam and recording! :)
