Oh! Good eye :D

How much are drums for a beginner, guys? Thinking of getting into it if it's not too expensive. Just a simple, kick drum, snare, hi-hat and like 3 of that other snare looking things (but without the rattley sound), and two of those metal, upside down, dish things (cymbals???)

I had the Ibanez Jem7VWH, didn't like the sound that much, prefer warmer sounds, so I've got a few of the Ibanez RG550 and RG570 with modded necks and modded them with all DiMarzio pickups.

How much did ya get that for?

Here's the funny thing...Perth, being the arse end of anywhere as a city, only has one decent hat shop, which is a joke considering the weather we get. But we have Australia's only decent headphone shop...and a lefty guitar shop.

My Tele cost $400. I didn't want to go large, but also didn't want to cheap out and risk getting something crap that didn't sound good or didn't stay in tune. Buying leftys makes that hard. The big stores only had 1 or 2 leftys and the cheapest were $1k. PK's Music in Mirrabooka sells heaps of leftys, so I got to try a good few out.

Did try out a $1800 Tele elsewhere when I was checking out amps and it's got a nicer feel, more roomy fretboard and masses more natural sustain, but apart from that, mine is plenty good enough to learn on.

A regular 5-piece kit (snare, two rack toms, floor tom and bass with cymbals and hardware) start at around $400. But that won't get you very much - cheap (basswood or poplar) shells, extremely crappy cymbals and cheap hardware (stands and all of the metal bits :p). Not a very good idea for someone your age.

Take one step up in price (to beginner-intermediate) and cymbals are no longer included with the drums. This way you have to select cymbals separately, which start at around $500 for a pack with a hi-hat, two crashes and a ride. Zildjian ZHT or Sabian XS20 are what I'd recommend.
Drums in this range start at about $1k (not including cymbals), and this is where I recommend you start.
Something like a Pearl Vision, Gretsch Catalina, Mapex Meridian, Yamaha Stage Custom, etc. would be a good start for you. With the cymbals that I mentioned earlier.

So, basically, drums are expensive.

I recommend you buy a pair of drum sticks and just practice on anything to see it you like drumming.
Watch videos (freedrumslessons and drumlessons.com on Youtube are good, the're actually same poeple), take lessons, listen and work out drumming in songs, talk to drummers, read drumming forums, watch more videos and just do anything you can to build your knowledge of drums.
If it's something you like, understand and see yourself doing, invest in a nice kit. :)

Whew! Really appreciate the info there. Thanks!

Looks like the money is better spent on a DJ kit (for me) x)

Music instruments always costs so damn much! How much does a triangle cost? Or is the metal stick sold separately too?

No worries.

No, it's not. ;)

Maybe you could look for a 2nd hand deal. I'll keep an eye out on ebay and such for you.

What about an Electric drum kit? They don't sound as good as the real thing but they're usually the ones always on sale

Na, definitely stick to acoustic. Electronic ones just don't feel right, not good to learn on. :)

Hey Marcus, I recall you having a Wavedrum, right?
I'm thinking of adding some electronics to my drum kit and I'd like to hear what you think of the Korg. :)

Lots of fun :) I haven't even bothered to get into the more advanced capabilities and pretty much just stick with drumming out a rhythm now and then. The headphone out needs more power and I occasionally get small electric tingles from the rim of the drum (!) but other than that I love it, plus it's great to sit people in front of and let them play away.

Nice. :)
I'll see if I can get to a shop and have a play on one tomorrow.
