Guitar playing - iPod deviceable playback thngo

Postby Drubbing » Thu Mar 29, 2012 10:42 am

OK, so I'm on my way to making my guitar not sound complete crap.

I need to play along to some simple songs, and later, backing tracks (for when I'm completely awesome). Unlike some amps, my guitar amp doesn't have iPod compatibility, so I need something to play my iPod on, while playing. I can't really use phones, as I'll want to hear both music and amp.

Most of the docks I've seen are room fillers and I don't want/need that.

Suggestions?

I use a Logitech iPod dock at work and is sounds surprisingly good. Got it for around $75 on eBay.

I'm assuming you want something like a mixer?
Did you try the Vox amPlug's? They have an AUX Line in where you can plug in an iPod or similar.
Plus they're really cheap for a practice amp and you can keep using headphones with them. :)

I have one of those for my bass. It's good for something portable, but it sounds pretty bad and the background noise for of the headphone amp is louder than the guitar itself.
Still an option, but there are better sounding alternatives.

No, not a mixer, and the amp plug is the Fiio E1 of guitar amps. I think guitar and iPod connected to it would sound pretty arse. I could go try one out though. Even if it were ok, I can only use it via phones. I really want a small, decent sounding dock to play my iPod on, unless there is anything else I haven't thought of.

If a mixer is of any help let me know, I have a Sansui mixer from back when they were a good brand. I'd be willing to lend it to you for a while, just in the shed at the moment, wasting space and frustrating me.

Thanks for the offer, but it wouldn't get used right away, I'm not a the full jam along stage yet. I think a mixer would be over-engineering for what I need too.

Yeah... TEAC, AKAI and that used to be pretty decent as well.

Now they're just brands to stick on junk. Sound better than Panafonic or Suny or whatever....

I don't see much of TEAC around anymore, their media was still very high quality during the 90s and the 00s. The Teac CD-R media was only bested by Kodac gold CD-Rs.

Unfortunately/fortunately the market shifted away from more expensive high quality CD-R media (3-8 dollars designed to last 10-50 years) to cheap CD-R media (0.50-1 dollar that lasts 2-4 years).

EDIT: I just ordered some archival quality dvds :puke:, there is still one manufacturer, though even they are talking about they are not sure how much longer they will produce them given the cost of gold. The Australia suppliers were out, and the American suppliers are running low :paranoid:.
