Lower buffer means your CPU will work a bit hard I "believe". I only tried lowering it because I read a guide from some 'expert' talking about usb devices requiring a much lower buffer to work properly. If i was using optical I could probably keep it at the default 1000 ms.

Disable the functions that launch things like itunes/wmp etc for the buttons and map them in foobar as global hotkeys in your preferences menu.
