Would a good protable amp Improve IPOD sound?

Postby flognuts » Wed Apr 11, 2012 5:31 pm

Sometimes sitting at the computer to listen to music can be a pain in the ass, so I use a portable, But obviously it doesn't sound as good. Is there anything you can do to improve the sound of an ipod? I got a fiio E7, would getting a better amp improve the quality or just make the current sound louder?

or any other solutions?

thanks.

If you use the usb connection to a computer or laptop running off batteries does the fiio E7 sound noticeably better?

What generation/model ipod do you have? Not all ipods are built the same, which is especially the case with current gen ipods. Are you using the line in connector from the ipod to the fiio? A couple of gens back the ipod range peaked in terms of SQ, then apple changed the components..., which wasn't a black and white SQ drop but it increased the variation across the product line.

I looked it up, the Fiio E7 actually measures surprisingly well  , though it does struggle a bit on higher impedance/inefficient headphones. If you are using efficient headphones the only 'weakness' of the Fiio is the SNR -91db, which isn't that bad especially for a portable.

Thanks for a good response.

The fiio E7 sounds quite a bit better than the stock laptop sound using its dac, but I don't use it for that.

I got the latest generation Ipod Classic 160gb hooked up to the amp on the fiio via line out.

Well my point was that it may not be the amp, but could be the ipod, if the fiio connected to a computer sounds significantly better than the ipod. I'm not an expert but from what I have been reading the line out signal on the current generation ipod classic's isn't as clean as it used to be, due to the dac chip performing integrated amping and dsp functions, though the Ipod you have has the best sound out of the current generation ipods.

I am not sure which portable amp has a significantly better SNR whilst keeping all the other specs the same. If the line out of the ipod is adding noise, then an amp with a significantly better SNR may make some kind of difference. You would have to see what Marcus or someone who knows more about the portable amps says. An amp some how has a better power supply configuration could make a difference too.

Just tested the fiio E7 with the ipod/dt250 and I tell you what, its actually a pretty impressive combo.

Makes me wonder will the sound improve further with a significantly better portable amp such as this
