Looking for an amp for the k701

Post by aKyRia » Sat Mar 05, 2011 11:57 pm

I've recently decided to buy the akg k701 and am looking for a decent amp for it. My budget is around 400aud but i dun really mind spending a little more for something nice.
I had my eyes on the stepdance, although i'd love to hear some experiences and suggestions.

So, what would be a decent amp for the k701 for around 400aud? Is the stepdance 'good' enough to make buying the k701 worthwhile?

ps I really liked the ath-ad2000, anyone knows where to get them in australia?

The AD2000 have been discontinued.

I wouldn't consider the Stepdance enough for the K701 - you're better off with something like the Einar, Concerto or T-33H.

hmm thx for the insight..
I'm although considering some of the Graham Slee amps like the Solo and Novo as well as the Lehmann Black Cube Linear, how would they work with the k701, and how good are they in general?

I don't rate the Lehmann amps that highly, the Graham Slee amps I haven't had a lot of time with, but I'd be very surprised if the T-33H or Concerto don't outperform them.

I hear that Slee, as well as Ray Samuel, charge an awful lot for the name alone, although not heard any myself. I agree with Marcus on the Lehmann, nothing special for the high price tag.

For a lot less money than the Lehmann, the Concerto is far better IMO.

Basically, for a hard to drive phone, you shouldn't be considering at any portable amp, and even some of the entry level desktops may not have enough power and refinement to get the best from them.

So what happened to the OP's $400 budget or only 'spending a little more'

Don't buy a K701 and an amp budget isn't a problem.

I have some K702's and had good results with an Audio-GD Fun, which is a bargain. You could try either the NFB10 or 11. Cant remember which one was within your budget. Check them out.

My favourite is the Darkvoice 337. It sounds thick and full and makes the Akg's really shine.

The other option is either the Schiit Valhalla or the new Lyr. My Lyr is due here this week. I mainly bought it to power my HE6 cans but I have heard that it works well with the K702's as well. The Schiit gear is cheap too. You will land the Lyr for approx $515 AUD. I think the Valhalla is $50 cheaper.
Portable: IPod 5G, iBasso D12, UE Triple fi 10
Home: MacBook pro, Audio-GD Fun, Darkvoice 337, AKG 702's recabled.
Wish list:Pure Music, Hifiman HE6

Hi

Best amp for the K701's? I haven't bought a pair of those yet, but am happily cruising with the opposition..

I've just scored the T-33H and should menton this now has a 'low', 'med' and 'high' gain switch (which the T-3H never had) which is right up the ally of the K701's. Ie the 'low' position for Alessandros, the 'medium' position for ATH's and the 'high' for 'K701's' and the like. Just me blurbying, but am keen to put forward my thoughts forward on this..

..and Marcus, those Talisman's? Absolutely love them all-over again (even this being the second time around). Don't know what's better, under $1,500 odd..

Kind regards

Graeme

Good to hear, Graeme - I'm really happy to have them back in again myself, they're just such a great choice they're ridiculously easy to recommend.

The Schiit is a surprisingly great match for the 702/1's. They add a meaty bottom end on to the wonderful airy and detailed mids and highs. Almost in the budget too. Better suited to the AKG's than either my Fun or my Darkvoice 337. A great match.
